The CP Carrillo-backed Top Alcohol Funny Car pilot left the starting line with a psychic .029-second reaction time and kept right on going for a 5.425, 269.67 win over Swede Ulf Leanders’ 5.508, 268.33. Aggressively testing in Phoenix prior to the Winternationals paid off for Top Alcohol Dragster driver Shawn Cowie, who scored his 11th national event win and second season-opener Wally with a defeat of Garrett Bateman.
Upgrades are usually done in stages. Each level will provide more performance than the one before it. However, they will also be more involved and expensive. The first upgrade we recommend is tuning the computer. This involves changing the fuel and ignition curves to optimize performance. A good tune can gain up to 40 hp on a stock engine. (Any significant upgrade will require re-tuning the computer.)
Your TPI and exhaust modifications should help performance, but don’t get so carried away that you give up everyday reliability. You should be able to hit the 350 hp mark with the computer and custom-burned chip. If you change fuel injectors, start with 22 lb./hr. units and go up only if top-end performance dictates more fuel.
Larger-capacity aftermarket fuel rails are also at risk for these issues, especially in boosted applications where an underhood turbo or supercharger is creating more heat for the rails and the fuel inside them to absorb. Seeing the problem at hand, Heatshield Products developed its FR Shields™ to combat this issue by wrapping the fuel rails in a deflective thermal barrier that keeps radiated heat from soaking into the rails (whether they be aluminum or other alloy) and heating the fuel inside the rails.
